Statement attributable to Mark Bell, President, Association of Electric Companies of Texas

January 10, 2023

“Senate Bill 3 (87R) provided direction to the PUC for addressing reliability and resiliency, and we appreciate the efforts of the Legislature to enhance our competitive ERCOT market. Strengthening the reliability and resiliency of ERCOT’s wholesale electric market is an urgent need for Texas. We look forward to working with the Public Utility Commission and the Legislature on these issues.

“The ERCOT wholesale electric market needs long-term fixes that promote investment in generation resources that can perform when they are needed most. This is not a future challenge; this is a challenge we’re facing today.

“Texas is growing, and electricity demand is growing with it. We’re projected to add 17 million more residents over the next 30 years, and we continue to lead the nation in economic growth. Texas needs wholesale market reform to attract the investment our state needs in electric infrastructure, providing the reliable electric supply Texans deserve both now, and for the future.”
